How to Identify a Wolf Spider

Wolf spiders are large, hairy, and brown to grey with darker stripe-like markings running down the body. They range from about 1 to 2 inches including the legs, and they move quickly in short bursts rather than the slow crawl typical of house spiders. Female wolf spiders are sometimes seen carrying an egg sac attached to their abdomen, or even carrying spiderlings on their back — a trait unique to this species in BC.

Wolf Spider vs. Widow Spider

Wolf spiders are frequently confused with black widow spiders because both are dark and ground-dwelling. The easiest way to tell them apart: widow spiders are glossy black with a red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen and are far less active, staying near a tangled web rather than roaming. Wolf spiders lack the hourglass marking and are far more mobile.

Are Wolf Spiders Dangerous?

Wolf spiders are not considered medically significant. They’re not aggressive and generally only bite when trapped against skin, producing a reaction similar to a bee sting. That said, a heavy wolf spider presence indoors is usually a sign of an underlying insect population they’re feeding on.
