Yes, there are cockroaches in BC — but almost entirely indoors. British Columbia’s climate is too cool and wet for cockroaches to establish outdoors the way they do in warmer parts of the world. Which cockroaches turn up in BC homes

According to Health Canada, German cockroaches are 1.3 to 1.6 cm long and tan to light brown, with two dark parallel streaks running from behind the head to the base of the wings. They have wings but they cannot fly. They are active at night, which is why an infestation is often well established before anyone sees one in daylight.

Other cockroach species are identified in BC from time to time, but they are uncommon in homes here and are usually carried in with deliveries, cardboard boxes or second-hand furniture rather than living locally.

Why cockroaches survive in BC’s climate

German cockroaches are not naturally cold-tolerant. What makes them a problem in British Columbia is that they do not need to be. Health Canada notes they have been found in Canadian buildings as far north as Nunavut — not because they can handle the cold, but because heated buildings are warm all year.

That single fact explains most of what makes them difficult here. A BC cockroach problem is a building problem, not a garden problem. Cold snaps will not clear it, and neither will waiting for winter. They live in the walls, voids and warm equipment spaces of the building itself.

Where cockroaches hide in Lower Mainland homes

Behind and underneath the fridge, dishwasher and stove, where motors stay warm
Inside kitchen cabinets, especially near the sink and along hinges and corners
Bathrooms, around plumbing penetrations and behind vanities
Basements and crawlspaces, which stay damp through a coastal winter
Wall voids and plumbing chases, particularly in multi-unit buildings
Inside cardboard, appliance housings and small electronics

How cockroaches spread through apartments and condos

This is the part that catches people out. In a townhouse, condo or apartment building, cockroaches move between units through shared wall voids, plumbing chases and electrical runs. A clean unit can develop a problem that started two doors down.

It also means treating a single suite in isolation often fails. If neighbours have the same issue, the building needs a coordinated approach, and strata or property management usually has to be involved. If you are a tenant, raise it with your landlord — in most BC rental situations pest treatment is the landlord’s responsibility, though you should confirm your own circumstances.

Are cockroaches in BC dangerous?

They are not aggressive and they do not bite, but they are a genuine health concern. Health Canada notes that cockroaches contaminate food and spread disease by walking over and excreting on food and food preparation surfaces, after travelling through garbage and sewers.

There is also a respiratory issue that gets overlooked. Cockroach droppings and shed body parts are a known asthma trigger. In a home with children or anyone with asthma, that is reason enough to deal with an infestation quickly rather than living with it.

Live insects when you turn a light on at night, especially in the kitchen
Droppings that look like coarse black pepper or coffee grounds along cabinet edges
A musty, oily smell that gets stronger as numbers grow
Shed skins and empty egg cases in cupboards, drawers and behind appliances
Smear marks along skirting boards and under sinks in damp areas

How to prevent cockroaches in BC

Fix dripping taps and clear standing water — cockroaches can last far longer without food than without water
Store dry food in sealed containers rather than open packets and boxes
Clean under and behind appliances, not just the visible floor
Seal gaps around pipes, skirting boards and cabinet backs
Break down and remove cardboard promptly, especially from deliveries and moves
Empty kitchen bins nightly and keep them lidded
