How to Get Rid of Pavement Ants in Your Residence

Pavement ants are one of the most common ant species found in BC homes and businesses. Small (2–3mm), dark brown, and relentless, they trail in large numbers across kitchen floors and counters in search of food. Here’s how to prevent and control pavement ant infestations effectively.

Identifying Pavement Ants

Pavement ants nest under concrete slabs, patios, sidewalks, and building foundations. In summer you’ll see characteristic sand mounds pushed up through cracks in pavement — the excavated soil from their tunnelling below. Inside homes they nest under flooring, in wall voids, and near heat sources. They’re attracted to almost any food including grease, sweets, and protein.

How to Prevent Pavement Ant Infestations

Seal entry points: Caulk cracks around the foundation, around pipe penetrations, and under doors. Pavement ants enter through the smallest gaps — a bead of caulk is the most effective prevention measure available.

Eliminate food sources: Store food in sealed containers, clean up crumbs and spills immediately, and keep garbage bins sealed. Remove pet food bowls overnight.

Reduce moisture: Fix leaking pipes and ensure proper drainage around the foundation. Moist soil near the foundation creates ideal pavement ant nesting conditions.

Remove harborage: Keep firewood, bricks, and stones away from the foundation. These create shelter for pavement ant colonies right at your building perimeter.

How to Control an Existing Pavement Ant Infestation

Gel bait placed along active ant trails is the most effective pavement ant control method. Workers carry the slow-acting bait back to the colony, eliminating the queen and nest within 7–14 days. Do not use fast-kill sprays alongside bait — they repel ants from the bait and significantly reduce its effectiveness.

For large or persistent infestations, professional treatment locates all entry points and applies residual insecticide to the perimeter and nest sites. Professional pavement ant control typically resolves infestations in one or two visits.
